Dataran Merdeka Bukit Nanas Taman Tasik Perdana

Places to Go
Kuala Lumpur (within the city itself) has quite a variety of interesting tourist attractions that are well worth exploring. It is easy to get around and safe to go around at night when many are attractively lit.

Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square)
Address: Jalan Raja
Description: Across the street from Gedung Sultan Abdul Samad (see below) this is where the first flag of Malaysia was raised at what is reported to be the world's tallest flagpole (at 100 meters). Situated in the heart of what was colonial Kuala Lumpur, this was formerly known as the 'Padang' when the British used it as a cricket ground. That said, Independence Square's central location and familiarity make it a reference point for other areas and attractions in the city.
Hours: 24 hours daily
Public Transport: Star LRT to Masjid Jamek Station turn north walk 1 block to Jl. Raja, turn left walk 100 meters on your right. Using the Monorail, go Hang Tuah station, transfer to the Star LRT and follow above directions.

Bukit Nanas
Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is the park that surrounds the base of the Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower) and is an attraction in its own right. The park was established in 1906 as a Permanent Reserve Forest with about 17 hectares (reduced to just over 9 hectares today). The park is the only rainforest still existing in the middle of a city. There is plenty of information about plants found within the park as well as trails to walk.
Opening hours: daily 9.00am - 6.00pm.
Admission: Free
Public Transport: Monorail to Raja Chulan. Walk west on Raja Chulan about 1 kilometer (downhill) entrance is on the north side of the road.

Taman Tasik Perdana (Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens)
Address: Main entrance on Jalan Parlimen
KL's Central Park, Taman Tasik Perdana is a favorite of locals looking for a quick escape from the stress of city life. Nestled on the southwestern edge of Kuala Lumpur proper, Taman Tasik covers 92 hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens, an artificial lake and several interesting attractions described below.
Opening hours: daily 9.00am - 6.00pm.
Admission: Admission to park is free, separate charges for attractions.
Public Transport: Star LRT to Masjid Jamek, exit north onto Jl. Tun Perak, crossing Jl. TAR and Jl. Raja Laut, head west on Jl. Parlimen until you reach the park - approximately 2 kilometers.

  • Orchid Garden
Perhaps the most beautiful and exotic plant in the world, orchids have a passionate following in Asia and are quite valuable economically. Visiting the Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden gives you an opportunity to see over 800 varieties of orchids on display and pick up a tip or two on how to cultivate these beautiful plants.
    Open: 9.00am - 6.00 pm (daily).
Admission: Free (except on Sat, Sun and Public Holidays).

  • Hibiscus Garden
Although not quite as popular as the orchid the hibiscus has nonetheless been proclaimed as the 'Queen of Tropical Flowers'. With over 500 varieties on display including the Rosa Sinensis, Malaysia's national flower, you will no doubt come away with a new appreciation for this flower found throughout Asia.
    Open: 9.00am - 6.00 pm (daily).

  • Deer Park
Deer Parks are quite common in Asia, as everyone seems to enjoy watching these gentle creatures roaming about a garden. Here at the Kuala Lumpur Deer Park Spotted Deer from Holland share a 2 hectare garden with Kancil (Mouse Deer) from Malaysia's rainforest.
    Open: 9.00am - 6.00pm (daily).
    Admission: Free.

  • Butterfly Park
It's hard to resist the beauty of a butterfly. It's all that much harder when there are over 6,000 of them fluttering about a tropical rainforest setting - which is what you will find at the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park.
    Open: 9.00am - 6.00pm (daily).
Admission: RM 10.00 (adults), RM3.00 (children).

    Zoos and Gardens

Most visitors to Kuala Lumpur will be pleasantly surprised by the number and variety of zoos, parks and gardens - there's even a rainforest in the middle of the city.

Whilst you can find bigger, 'better' zoos and gardens in other cities around the world, Kuala Lumpur has done a better developing and maintaining such facilities than most other countries in S.E.Asia and for those so inclined these parks and gardens should prove quite interesting.
